I am a Canadian Craft Brewer

I won’t be there to see it, but Vancouver Craft Beer Week is beginning to take shape. Dinners and tours are being planned, and it seems like all the breweries in the area are getting behind this. I wrote a few weeks ago that I felt a lot of optimism about the beer scene in Vancouver. In some ways, it hasn’t changed much in the past ten or fifteen years. The breweries are mostly all the same – the brewers are mostly all the same. Yet, things just have a different feel right now.

Everybody supports one another. When you go to beer events, you now see a lot of new faces – just a few years ago the club was tiny and you kind of knew everybody’s face if not name. The brewers themselves are now a fully organized unit. Take note of the Vancouver Beer Week promotional video I am a Canadian Craft Brewer:

Things are changing. We’re on about the 90th monkey here. As with other scenes in the Northwest, Vancouver isn’t about big sexy hype beers, but is about excellence in everyday beers. That’s an identity that might never have the city ranked as world class, but it’s an identity that works for the people who live there and drink the beers. I for one can’t wait to get back into town and enjoy the good living that comes with a sea breeze, a mountain view and a nice IPA.
